Scramble for food and water as Hurricane Lane approaches Hawaii

Hurricane Lane soaked Hawaii's Big Island on Thursday, dumping almost 20 inches of rain in almost 24 hours as residents stocked up on supplies and tried to protect their homes ahead of the state's first hurricane since 1992.

Already, the southern islands are being lashed with high winds and torrential rains which have touched off flash floods, landslides and raging surf as residents hunker down.

A powerful hurricane unleashed torrents of rain and landslides Thursday that blocked roads on the rural Big Island but didn't scare tourists away from surfing and swimming at popular Honolulu beaches still preparing to be pummeled by the erratic storm.

The storm is reported to have winds up to 145 miles per hour, and Hawaii Governor David Ige is warning residents to prepare themselves with at least 14 days of food and water and to seek shelter, CNN reported.

CALGARY-Hurricane Lane's path toward Hawaii has forced WestJet to cancel all inbound flights to the islands for the next two days.

"We're going to be in business for longer", said Ray Moody, a longtime Hawaii Red Cross volunteer.

Since there is not much lava reaching the ocean anymore, the hurricane shouldn't have too much of an impact on the volcano region, according to Denison University Geophysicist Erik Klemetti. Five of the eight largest Hawaiian Islands remain in the forecast cone of concern, including the most heavily populated island of Oahu.

Hurricanes rarely make landfall in Hawaii and the last major storm to strike the state was almost three decades ago, when Hurricane Iniki barreled into the island of Kauai, leaving six people dead and causing billions of dollars in damage.

People have been rushing to stores for supplies and are stocking up on canned foods, ramen, water and toilet paper. The agency says the storm has weakened to a Category 3 but can still cause major damage.
