Madonna slammed for 'disrespectful' Aretha Franklin tribute at MTV VMAs

Madonna opened her heart and expressed herself about Aretha Franklin at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards on Monday night - but was promptly slammed for what turned into an egocentric tribute.

Madonna didn't have sheet music though so she chose to sing the song acapella because she knew it "off by heart" anyway - and even though she was "some skinny-ass white girl", she was still able to sing the song no bother.

But as she continued, it became an, uh, interesting story much more about Madonna and much less about Aretha - immediately after which, Madge transitioned awkwardly and presented the Video of the Year nominees and victor.

Rather than a musical tribute, Aretha's legacy was entrusted in the hands of one of pop music's biggest stars, Madonna, who shared some words about the singer's impact on her life.

Maybe there's a reason for all this?!

The overall impression from last night's MTV Video Music Awards seems to be that nobody was feeling it.

"In a 10-minute speech, Madonna recalled her early days as an aspiring singer and dancer, including one audition where she performed an a cappella version of Franklin's iconic "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman".

On one hand, it makes sense for Madonna to bid goodbye to an icon on MTV considering she's basically the first lady of the network.

"We're definitely going to honor her", said Jesse Ignjatovic, co-founder of the production company Den of Thieves and executive producer of the VMAs. Madonna's VMAs posts, including one that mentioned the hashtags "respect" and "arethafranklin", racked up hundreds of comments after the awards show. You are probably all wondering why I am telling you this story. "She led me to where I am today", she continued. "She influenced so many people in this house tonight, in this room tonight, and I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us".

"I love you ty for awesome us with your handsome and powerful speech you're wonderful", another fan added.

"Does Madonna know Madonna didn't die?".
