Oscars 2020 Airdate Announced and Changes Teased by AMPAS

"We are committed to producing an entertaining show in three hours, delivering a more accessible Oscars for our viewers worldwide", the letter reads. "The Board of Governors took this charge seriously", the message stated.

To accommodate a three-hour ceremony, the Academy will present select categories live in the Dolby Theatre and during commercial breaks. Winners in less prominent categories will likely receive their awards during commercial breaks, with highlights from those presentations edited and aired later in the broadcast, according to the report.

The Academy's new Oscars popular film category isn't so popular. The 92nd Oscars have also been brought forward from 23 February to 9 February 2020, though the eligibility dates for Oscar releases and the voting period will remain the same.

The next Oscars air Sunday, February 24, 2019.

Ratings for the 91st Academy Awards fell to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers, down 19 percent from the previous year and the first time the glitzy awards ceremony had fewer than 30 million viewers since 2008. They're scooching up the broadcast a couple weeks earlier in February - but not until the 2020 telecast. There are no other details available about the award yet, including eligibility information, but the change is part of a continued effort by the Academy to keep the Oscars "relevant in a changing world".

The Red Planet will appear super bright with an orange-red tint making it almost impossible to miss in the nighttime sky. It can be seen by the naked eye, but try looking with a good set of binoculars if you don't have a telescope handy.

But there are still plenty of popular films that earn Oscar recognition in top categories, like "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015), "The Martian" (2015) and "Get Out" (2017).

Superhero films such as Black Panther are among those which could now stand a much better chance of being recognised during awards season.

Essentially, with these changes, the Oscars are looking to become more like the MTV Movie Awards, and that's a damn shame.

"Here's the ten highest-grossing films, when accounting for inflation aka America's most "popular" films," Palotta wrote. "Popular films are films!" In order to accomplish this, not all of the categories will be presented live.

This experiment failed, and it felt as though the only way to "fix" it was to just go back to five Best Picture nominations.
