Trump Returns to 'Witch Hunt' Tweets Against Mueller Probe

As the result of multiple FOIA lawsuits - whose arguments were strengthened by Trump's tweets and statements from the House Intelligence community - the DOJ has released a stack of FISA warrant applications.

Though heavily redacted, the documents show that the infamous and unverified Steele Dossier was a major component of the 2016 surveillance warrant.

FILE - Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser of U.S. President Donald Trump, speaks at a news conference at RIA Novosti news agency in Moscow, Russia, Dec. 12, 2016.

Trump's laser focus on Steele ignores other facts as well, including that Page had previously lived in Russia and was on the FBI's radar as early as 2013, when it suspected Russian intelligence agents were trying to recruit Americans.

The FBI attested in four separate Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) applications that Page, an energy consultant, was a foreign agent of the Russian government.

He distanced himself from the Trump campaign in September 2016 while under scrutiny.

President Donald Trump on Sunday also accused the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation of misleading the courts, following the release of a previously classified foreign surveillance warrant application.

Raju then said that he tried to ask Nunes if he actually read the 412-page warrant application, and instead of answering the question, he once again turned the conversation back towards CNN, claiming that Raju was ignoring the criticism that he had just leveled against CNN. Trump tweeted about the release of the documents early Sunday morning from Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is spending the weekend.

Trump said the Steele dossier "was responsible for starting" Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into links between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. Trump tweeted July 23.

"I've never been an agent of a foreign power by any stretch of the imagination", he says.

COLEMAN: Charlie, do these documents prove that the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government? The FBI said in the application that Steele wasn't told who had hired him to conduct that work, but that Steele "was likely looking for information that could be used to discredit" Trump's campaign.

Page, a foreign policy adviser for the campaign, acknowledged that he may have participated in some meetings with Russians, but not at the level he's accused of. "I think he's said it about a thousand times". Witch Hunt Rigged, a Scam!'

At a joint news conference with the Russian leader, Trump said he had no reason to believe that Russia would have interfered in the 2016 United States presidential election, contradicting the consensus of the United States intelligence community; he later said he misspoke.

Speaking to CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" Sunday, Page called the accusations against him "so ridiculous". As a private consultant, Steele was hired to investigate Trump's ties to Russian Federation as part of opposition research funded by Democrats.

"Andrew McCarthy - 'I said this could never happen". "Court hearing transcripts about these FISA warrants should be released quickly so the public can have full information and accountability for any misuse of FISA warrants to target the Trump team". Trump has asserted without evidence that the documents, heavily redacted and released Saturday under the Freedom of Information Act, "confirm with little doubt" that intelligence agencies misled a special court that approved the wiretap warrant.
