Tropical Storm Chris churns offshore of the Carolinas while Beryl weakens

A tropical storm watch remains in effect for Saint Lucia (SLU).

While Chris is not forecast to move over the next several days, Tropical Storm Beryl is moving west-northwestward toward the Lesser Antilles.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center. The current forecast track from the National Hurricane Center has the storm tracking across the islands of the Lesser Antilles by the end of the weekend, then moving south of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico on Monday. We now have two simultaneous tropical cyclones in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Beryl east of the Lesser Antilles and newly minted Tropical Storm Chris just off the Carolina coast. Forecasters said the storm probably would dissipate once it moved south of Haiti and the Dominican Republic on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Beryl is a small tropical storm. Impacts could include life-threatening surf and rip current conditions affecting portions of the coast from North Carolina through the mid-Atlantic into early next week.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Beryl was downgraded from a hurricane on Saturday. The storm's sustained winds were at 74 miles per hour. Dominica was hit by Hurricane Maria previous year as a Category 5 storm and hasn't fully recovered.

Forecasters said Beryl would likely weaken further after crossing the Lesser Antilles.

Right on schedule, Tropical Depression #3 was upgraded to Tropical Storm Chris early Sunday morning, the third named storm of the 2018 Atlantic Hurricane Season. The projected wind speeds also came down a tad to an expected peak at 90 miles per hour in two days, but forecasters stressed there was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Beryl.

According to NHC, additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours.

The storm should begin to weaken once it reaches the eastern Caribbean on Monday.
