Tesla investigating 'extensive' sabotage by rogue employee, Musk says

Musk went on to urge employees to be "extremely vigilant" and to report anything suspicious. The employee was reportedly seeking a promotion within the company but did not receive it, something which in hindsight is described to be "definitely the right move" in Musk's company-wide email. While he says this could be a random event, Musk quotes former Intel CEO Andy Grove's "Only the paranoid survive" warning.

To speed up vehicle production, Musk said Tesla is now testing an unconventional alternative, raising a giant tent structure on the Fremont grounds and building a new factory line inside from warehouse scrap.

He wrote: "Most of the time, when there is theft of goods, leaking of confidential information, dereliction of duty or outright sabotage, the reason really is something simple like wanting to get back at someone within the company or at the company as a whole".

Mr Musk did not name the employee and company spokeswoman Gina Antonini declined to comment on the email. Tesla confirmed that message.

Last week, Mr Musk said 9% of Tesla's workforce would be cut as part of a restructuring of the carmaker, which has not made an annual profit since it was created almost 15 years ago.

Tesla has been dogged with delays surrounding delivery of its all-electric BMW 3 Series-rivalling Model 3 saloon, but continues to push ahead with future products such as the Tesla Semi truck, the new Roadster and an EV alternative the Volkswagen Golf, which Musk alluded to at the company's recent shareholder meeting. This is Tesla's third production line in Freemont, and it was built in just three weeks as the deadline for the ramp-up approaches.

While the fire may have been an accident, Musk cautioned vigilance in the building.

The layoffs, Musk said, were part of a "difficult but necessary" reorganization targeting mostly salaried employees, not workers on the production line, adding that the cuts would "not affect our ability to reach Model 3 production targets in the coming months".

ELON "MUSK" GRIMES has let rip a barrage of vitriol over alleged sabotage at his Tesla factory. "Then there are the oil & gas companies, the wealthiest industry in the world - they don't love the idea of Tesla advancing the progress of solar power & electric cars", he wrote. He claims that while these companies cheat about emissions, maybe they can cheat in other ways.

Tesla is no stranger to concerns of sabotage.
