Trump Nominated For Nobel Peace Prize After Singapore Summit

Anti-immigration Norwegian politicians have nominated Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize after his historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to discuss nuclear disarmament.

Trump himself has mused about earning the Nobel saying "everyone thinks so, but I would never say it", when asked about the possibility of the prize last month.

In the past seven days, the keywords "President Trump", "Kim Jong-un", and "Nobel Peace Prize" continue to trend upward in Google search queries.

In the US, the gap widens with President Trump showing a 100-point jump to Kim Jong-un's 37-point increase.

There have been 98 Nobel Peace Prizes awarded since 1901.

The Oslo-based panel has closed nominations for the 2018 prize, so Mr Trump's Singapore triumph could not bear fruit until the next victor is announced in October 2019.

Trump nominated for Peace Prize by Norway right-wing lawmakers

The prizes are administered by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, appointed by Norway's parliament.

The formal nomination letter, penned by Christian Tybring-Gjedde and Per-Willy Amundsen, details the strong negotiating stance taken by Trump, relating it to a similar strategy employed by former President Theodore Roosevelt, an iconic figure that served as 26th President of the United States.

It is unclear whether he was nominated for this year's prize, but he was also put forth as a candidate in 2016 and 2017. It was the first meeting of the US President with the leader of the DPRK.

If he is not invited to Oslo next year - or at any time during his presidency - the soonest the world will find out if Mr Trump was ever considered for the Nobel Peace Prize is 2069. So while Trump and Kim could be among the 330 nominees for 2018, an award linked to North Korea may be more likely in 2019.

In 2009, the Nobel Peace Prize award to newly-elected US President Barack Obama was widely criticized as premature.
