Sri Lanka were ready to forfeit St. Lucia Test

Sri Lanka's cricketers refused to take the field on the third day of the second cricket Test against the West Indies at St. Lucia after umpires Ian Gould and Aleem Dar changed the ball, the worldwide media reported.

Chandimal has breached Article 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to changing the condition of the ball in breach of clause 41.3 of the ICC Standard Test Match, ODI and T20I Playing Conditions.

Following concerns raised by umpires Aleem Dar and Ian Gould about the condition of the ball nearing the end of the second day, Sri Lanka were advised before the start of play on Saturday that they could not continue with the existing ball.

Sri Lanka eventually resumed play on day three on Saturday under protest, after delaying the start and strongly denying they had tampered with the ball.

After discussions between officials and the players, match referee Javagal Srinath upheld Gould and Dar's decision, with the five penalty runs taking the Windies to 123 for two in response to the tourists' 253 all out. They made a decision to change the ball and levied a penalty of 5 runs against Sri Lanka's name.

They were assessed five penalty runs although that relatively minor punishment was inconsequential compared to the Sri Lankans´ obvious anger at being accused of what amounts to cheating.

"The team management has informed us that Sri Lankan players have not engaged in any wrongdoing", the statement read.

West Indies won the first test by 226 runs. But the home side was all out in a rush after tea for 300, a lead of 47 on the first innings.

ESPNcricinfo understands that the umpires had laid their charge after reviewing footage of the second day's play, and finding evidence pointing to the application of a substance to the ball.

That match was the only Test in the game's history to be forfeited after Pakistan refused to return to the field.

Earlier, Australia's Cameron Bancroft, Sri Lanka's Dasun Shanaka (2017) and South Africa's Faf du Plessis (2016) were also held for the same charge.

Bancroft was subsequently whacked with a nine-month ban from worldwide and first-class cricket by Cricket Australia.

Opener Devon Smith fell for 61, having added only eight to his overnight half-century, while wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich followed up his century in the first Test with 55. But fast bowler Lahiru Kumara took the most wickets, four.
