The Sunday eruption marked the second time this year that the mountain erupted, spewing hot lava spilling down the sides and sending thick smoke billowing nearly six miles into the air. Ashen remnants covered neighborhoods.

There are no immediate reports of injures, damage to buildings or fatalities. "I think they ended up buried", Consuelo Hernandez, a resident of the village of El Rodeo, told Diario de Centroamerica.

In another video, a visibly exhausted woman, her face blackened from ash, said she had narrowly escaped as lava poured through corn fields.

Around 3,100 residents of communities near the volcano were eventually moved, and 20 sent to the hospital, according to Guatemala's CONRED national disaster management agency. Some firefighters were pictured weeping as they left the scene of the destruction.

About 1.7 million people have been affected by the eruption and more than 3,000 evacuated, the Guatemalan government tweeted. The explosion will affect 1.7 million people.

The volcano, about 40km (25 miles) south-west of the capital Guatemala City, has been spewing rocks, black smoke and ash into the sky.

Authorities have confirmed that at least seven people were killed and over 300 injured. A major eruption devastated nearby farms in 1974, but no deaths were recorded.

"The eruption.is reaching its end with 14.763 feet of ash and weak-to-moderate explosions and incandescence in its crater", it said in a statement.

No tsunami alerts have been issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre.
