Many corporations, including Microsoft and Alphabet Inc.'s Google, use GitHub to store their corporate code and to collaborate.

After the deal closes, GitHub's financials will be reports as part of Microsoft's Intelligent Cloud segment. Microsoft is no stranger to ingesting huge companies. More importantly for Microsoft, perhaps, the acquisition would give it the opportunity to integrate its cloud and development tools more closely with some of the most popular open-source projects.

Code hosting service GitLab has seen a massive traffic spike after news broke over the weekend that Microsoft has agreed to acquire GitHub, the world's largest code repository.

GitHub now hits 27 million software developers and 80 million repositories of code, according to Bloomberg.

Microsoft's Nat Friedman will take over as the Chief Executive of San Francisco-headquartered GitHub, whose current CEO Chris Wanstrath will become a Microsoft technical fellow.

However, there are Microsoft products and services - for example, Visual Studio Team System (VSTS) - that Microsoft will need to decide how to integrate with GitHub.

There have always been rumors that Microsoft has an interest in buying GitHub, but in recent weeks it seems that talks between the two companies have been getting more serious.
