Andrew Lincoln leaving Walking Dead during season 9

Collider is reporting that series star Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes) will exit the show in season nine, which is set to premiere later this fall.

AMC is yet to comment on Andrew's departure. It remains to be seen if Lincoln's exit will win back viewers who left during the Rick vs. Negan storyline or if this will only make fans angrier.

With Lincoln now set to exit the series, questions about the future of The Walking Dead will undoubtedly begin surfacing as season 9 draws closer to debuting later this year.

The same report states that Rick will only feature in half-a-dozen episodes of the upcoming season before calling it quits.

The eighth series received its lowest ratings since season one, and is thought to have lost a third of its young adult audience.

In addition to Lincoln, there have also been murmurings that Lauren Cohan, aka Maggie Greene, will leave this season as well.

There have also been reports that Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, is negotiating a new deal worth more than $20 million (£15 million).

"The Walking Dead" fans are well accustomed to saying goodbye to fan favorite characters, but they better start preparing to say an ultimate farewell next season.

Lincoln, Reedus, Lauren Cohan, and Danai Gurira are all set to return for series nine, which is now in production. If the show sticks to its tried-and-tested (see: predictable) formula, this nearly certainly means Rick will kick the bucket in the mid-season finale. Can the show survive without him?

Collider has heard that AMC and the show's producers have offered Norman Reedus a pay bump to stick around and assume the leading man duties.

Rick Grimes is a central character in The Walking Dead universe, for both the TV series and the comic books on which it is based.
