USA team heading to Singapore to work on summit

The White House confirmed on Saturday that an advance team of officials would leave for Singapore this weekend, as originally scheduled, to prepare for the possible summit.

South Korea's Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, in a surprise move, spent two hours together at the truce village of Panmunjom, and had a candid discussion about the potential U.S. -Korea meeting, Moon's office said in text message.

It is North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's "fixed will" that a summit with US President Donald Trump in Singapore should go ahead, state media say.

South Korean officials told Reuters that the objective of the meeting was to ensure that the Singapore summit goes ahead as planned.

During their meeting on April 27, they confirmed a shared goal of the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula and agreed to push for an official end to the 1950-53 Korean War and a peace treaty.

Mr. Trump's back-and-forth over his summit plans with Mr. Kim has exposed the fragility of Seoul as an intermediary.

South Korea, a longtime US ally, was not notified ahead of time before Trump's letter canceling with Kim was made public.

President Donald Trump continued his Twitter attack on Special Counsel Robert Mueller this morning. "It is scheduled to take place on Thursday of this week".

A spokesman for Moon Jae-In, the South Korean president, said details of the surprise meeting would soon be revealed.

It was the second time in a month the leaders of the two Koreas met, this time just north of the demilitarized zone separating the countries.

The footage released by the Blue House showed Moon being accompanied by Suh Hoon, director of the South's intelligence agency, while Kim is accompanied by Kim Yong-chol, director of the North's United Front Department, which is responsible for inter-Korean relations.

Trump announced earlier this week that he was canceling the planned June 12 summit with Kim.

"They very much want to do it; we'd like to do it", he said.

Trump said on Friday, May 25, that Washington was having "productive talks" with Pyongyang about reinstating the June 12 meeting. He did, however, finish his statement with "So, we'll see what happens".

Hopes for a lasting peace in the Korean peninsula are not entirely dashed following President Trump's tweet late Friday that the next month's talks with North Korea in Singapore could be back on after "productive talks" between the two countries.

The potentially historic meeting between Trump and Kim was on the verge of collapse amid growing distrust between the two sides.
