The Lone Star State also dominated the 15 most-populated USA cities as of July 2017, with an estimated 2.3 million residents in Houston, which ranked fourth overall behind New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago.

The nation's housing stock grew by more than 1 million previous year, reaching over 137 million units, according to Census reports.

Some of the metro-east's largest communities had population drops in 2017, according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau estimates.

It's no secret that there's been a friendly competition brewing between Chicago and Houston in recent years, and just-released census figures may keep that going: As Chicago's population declined for a third straight year, the Texas city's head count has continued to climb.

Texas cities dominated the list of those gaining the most population from 2016 to 2017.

The Census Bureau's July 1, 2017 population estimate for Bend is well above the one released last fall by the Portland State University Population and Research Center.

Irvine added 11,068 people in the year - the No. 14 gain in population count - to 277,453. The difference between 861,542 in 2016 and 869,666 in 2017 works out to a 0.94 percent increase.

"That's a growth rate of 1.6 percent".

The county's rate of growth trailed the 49-percent rate of Williams County of North Dakota as the top-ranked county in the country.

Some of the other cities with the largest population gains were Phoenix (24,000); Dallas (18,900); Fort Worth, Texas (18,700); Los Angeles (18,600); Seattle (17,500); and Charlotte, North Carolina (15,600).

For the others, the Town of Babylon was down 280 people, or -0.13 percent; Huntington, down 284 people, or -0.14 percent; Islip, down 477 people, or -0.14 percent; Riverhead, down 26 people, or -0.08 percent; and Smithtown, down 130 people, or -0.11 percent. Fort Worth passed Indianapolis to become the 15th largest city in the nation. The number one spot on the list went to San Antonio, Texas - which is up more than 24,000 residents.

"It's gone up and down a bit, but that's where we're headed", Frey said. But a year ago, eight of the 50 largest cities shrank, with Baltimore registering the biggest decline.

But City Manager Bill Parrish said he doesn't see the city and rural areas as competing for population.

That slow down in growth has also been reflected at the county level in Harris County - home to Houston - which in 2016 lost its eight-year long claim to the largest annual gain in residents in the country.
