It is also in the proximity to the densely populated city of Mbandaka, which is a crossroads in the province of Equateur and to neighboring provinces.

Even if the logistics of the "fridge bridge" prove easy enough to overcome, "the vaccine is not a magic bullet", Salama told Reuters this week, especially since health workers have been infected.

This proximity to the Congo River creates a potential pathway for the disease to travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo's capital, Kinshasa, which is home to over 12 million people.

"So we are entering a new phase of the Ebola outbreak that is now affecting three health zones, including an urban health zone", the minister said on Wednesday. Laboratory tests on two samples from Wangata confirmed one specimen as positive for Ebola, while the other was negative. The Bikoro health zone is about 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Mbandaka and 45 kilometers from Ikoko Impenge, which have suspected cases.

Ministry of Health officials say epidemiologists are working to identify those who may have come in contact with suspected cases, while workers are monitoring people's movement along regional water and land routes. A total of 44 cases have now been reported, including 23 deaths, according to the World Health Organisation.

Three cases were confirmed, 20 were "probable" cases of Ebola, and 21 were "suspected", the World Health Organization said.

"For the first time, we are offering vaccination to all global responders - and we'll be doing that in Geneva and in Kinshasa", Salama said on Thursday in a telephone interview.

Jeremy Farrar, MD, PhD, director of Wellcome Trust, today in a statement on Twitter called the case confirmation in Mbandaka an extremely concerning development.

Additionally, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a Travel Alert Level 2 related to this outbreak.

The first batch of around 4,000 Ebola vaccines was sent by the World Health Organization to the DRC capital Kinshasa on Wednesday. Thousands more were expected to arrive in the coming days.

Ebola is lethal and highly contagious, which makes it hard to contain - especially in urban environments where people are mobile and come into more contact with others.

Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is a rare and deadly disease in people and nonhuman primates.

"Local volunteers and health workers are the community's alarm system", said Ben Adinoyi, who heads the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' health unit for Africa.

Patients' may bleed internally, or bleed from the ears, eyes, nose or mouth. They are critical to the early identification and containment of new cases.

Over the past week, several countries in the region, some of which surround the DRC, have announced response measures to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus in their territories.

A handout photograph released by UNICEF on May 13, 2018 shows health workers wearing protective equipment as they prepare to attend to suspected Ebola patients at Bikoro Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo, May 12, 2018.

If a flight staff notices a passenger exhibiting Ebola symptoms, the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations [42 CFR 70.11 and 71.21] contain requirements for reporting death and illness to CDC that occur on domestic flights between U.S. states and territories, and on worldwide flights arriving to the United States. The violence was sparked by existing tensions between customary chiefs in Kasai-Central Province and the government in 2016, but the widening conflict has since pulled in militias, armed groups and security forces across an area the size of Germany.
